
		Staff The Andrology / Embryology Laboratory is directed under the auspices of David E. Battaglia, Ph.D.. Dr. Battaglia comes to OHSU with over 20 years of experience with the biology of oocytes and fertilization. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1977, received a Masters degree in Reproductive Biology at the University of Hawaii in 1978, and a Ph.D. in Biological Structure at the University of Washington in 1986. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the department of Biochemistry at the University of Washington from 1986-90 and subsequently joined the faculty in Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Minnesota in 1990. Dr. Battaglia, joined the faculty in OBGYN at the University of Washington as an Assistant Professor and Director of the In Vitro fertilization laboratory in 1992. He became an Associate Professor in that department in 1997. Dr. Battaglia is board certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis and has extensive experience with advancements in clinical laboratories and in vitro fertilization procedures. His research has examined many aspects of fertilization biology from sea urchins to humans. His current interests focus on the effects of maternal aging on oocyte biology, in addition to advancing technologies surrounding oocyte and ovarian freezing. In March of 2004 he was featured in the Portland Monthly as one of "Portland's Best Doctors" (445Kb pdf). The article relates an unusual clinical situation in which he was able to turn a negative into a positive outcome by applying insights gained from his oocyte freezing research. Our 14 other staff members are distinguished by accumulating a 13 year average of professional reproductive experience in the laboratory. Patient privacy, gamete / embryo security, and all laboratory procedures are assured and routinely reviewed by the accreditingboards of the Health Division of the States of Oregon and New York, as well as the American Society of Reproductive Medicine-College of American Pathologists.
